Description
The tomato ‘Siberian Tiger’ (Solanum lycopersicum) is a true eye-catcher in the garden. Its medium-sized, round fruits immediately stand out due to their striking, contrasting colours: a vibrant pinkish-rose base with dark violet to black shoulders, accentuated by fine, dark stripes. This distinctive colouring results from a high concentration of anthocyanins—valuable plant compounds known for their health benefits. In addition to its impressive appearance, this variety delights with a well-balanced, fruity-spicy flavour, combining a delicate sweetness with pleasant acidity—perfect for fresh consumption as well as creative recipes such as colourful tomato salads or chutneys.
Originally from Russia, ‘Siberian Tiger’ is prized for its resilience and cold tolerance. Even in short summers and cooler climates, it produces a generous yield. The plants grow vigorously, reaching a height of about 150 to 180 cm, with numerous side shoots that should be regularly pinched out to encourage the development of larger fruits.

Sowing and care
Sowing ‘Siberian Tiger’ begins indoors from March in a warm, protected environment. The seeds should be sown approximately 0.5 cm deep in seed compost and kept evenly moist. Germination typically occurs within 6 to 14 days at an ideal temperature of 20 to 26 °C. Once the young plants have developed two true leaf pairs, they can be pricked out and transplanted into nutrient-rich soil.
From mid-May onwards, when there is no longer a risk of frost, the plants can be placed outdoors in open ground, raised beds, or large containers. A sunny, sheltered location encourages strong growth and fruit production. Regular watering—without waterlogging—and feeding every two weeks with a potassium-rich fertiliser will promote a bountiful harvest. The plants grow to a height of around 150 cm and should be supported with stakes or tied to strings. By pinching out the side shoots, you can control the plant’s growth and achieve larger, more flavourful fruits. Harvesting begins in July and continues well into the autumn.
