Description
A Fragrant Classic from the Old World
Sweet Pea 'Matucana' (Lathyrus odoratus) is one of the oldest known varieties and originally hails from Peru. It is considered a near-original form of the wild species introduced to Europe in the 18th century – and remains famous for its intensely sweet fragrance, unmatched to this day.
Its bicolour blooms in deep purple and violet are smaller than those of modern cultivars, yet all the more charming and striking. With its nostalgic growth habit and wonderfully scented flowers, it is perfect for romantic gardens, trellises and fragrant borders.
The plants reach up to 150 cm in height with climbing support and thrive in sunny to semi-shaded locations with well-drained, humus-rich soil. The non-edible seed pods can be harvested for propagation in the following season.
