The Black Mullein delights with its high contrast blossoms. However, black is slightly exaggerated. The centre of the blossoms is dipped in a dark red. Like all mulleins, it only forms the ground-covering leaf rosette in the first year. In the second year, the beautiful, yellow inflorescences with the purple stamen form. Subsequently, the plant sows itself in early autumn through its numerous small seeds - like that, it establishes itself permanently in suitable locations.

The blossoms of the mullein contain many mucins and saponins and, therefore, are a good mucolytic remedy against colds. As a tea for colds, they are especially suitable and aren't only cough-loosening but also delicious. The seeds of the mullein, however, according to Aristotle, daze fish and, like that, facilitate fishing when they are scattered into the water.

Hardy biennial. Outdoor sowing possible from May to September. In the second year the rosette is formed. The seeds needs light and a cold period (one winter) for germination. The plant loves dry to slightly moist, sandy loamy soils.
