Description
A nearly forgotten Czech variety with an exceptionally long harvest window
The broccoli ‘Limba’ is a rare, historic variety from the Czech Republic and botanically belongs to Brassica oleracea var. italica. As an open-pollinated organic variety, it is now mainly maintained by specialised conservation growers, thereby actively contributing to the preservation of genetic diversity.
‘Limba’ is considered a very early and notably bolt-resistant broccoli variety. From planting out to harvesting the main head, approximately 65 to 75 days pass. The medium-sized, dark to medium green heads impress with their mild, aromatic flavour. After harvesting the main head, the plant produces numerous side shoots with smaller florets. This significantly extends the harvest period, making the variety particularly attractive for home gardens.
It can be grown both in spring and especially for summer and autumn crops. Even under changeable conditions and cooler temperatures, ‘Limba’ remains reliable and shows little tendency to bolt prematurely. The florets are versatile in use - fresh, steamed, for casseroles, for freezing or for short-term storage.

Sowing and care
Sowing & Care of broccoli ‘Limba’
Pre-cultivation takes place from late January to April in a greenhouse or on a windowsill at 15 to 20 °C. Germination takes approximately 8 to 12 days. From mid-April onwards, the young plants can be set out into the open ground. Direct sowing is possible from mid-April to June. The sowing depth is 0.5 to 1 cm. Plant spacing should be around 60 x 50 cm to allow strong plants with well-developed side shoots to form.
Broccoli is a heavy feeder and requires deep, humus-rich, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny to partially shaded position. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged and should preferably not be too acidic. Regular fertilisation and an even water supply promote the formation of compact heads and numerous side shoots.
