Description
The creeper, which originates from India, is interpreted as the legendary "soma" by some ethnologists. The contained active agent ergine is said to have a similar effect to LSD.
Note on Varieties:
Within the species Argyreia nervosa, two informal varieties are sometimes distinguished: var. nervosa and var. speciosa.
Var. nervosa is considered the typical form with smaller flowers, while var. speciosa is characterised by particularly large, ornamental blooms.
In addition to these visual differences, some sources suggest variations in the natural alkaloid content of the seeds.
Var. nervosa is often associated with a higher level of ergoline alkaloids (e.g. lysergic acid amide, LSA), while var. speciosa is generally considered low in alkaloids.
These observations are anecdotal and not confirmed by formal scientific studies. Composition may vary depending on origin and cultivation.
This distinction is not officially recognised botanically and is intended for ornamental or collector use only.
