Indian Tobacco is a beautiful, annual decorative plant for sunny places in the near-natural garden. It bears whitish-purple blossoms from which the inflated fruits develop. It belongs to the bellflower family but, contrary to most of its low-growing relatives, it only gets one metre high.

The herb was smoked by North American Indians and, therefrom, bears the name Indian Tobacco. Its inhalation is said to lead to a feeling of mental calmness and clarity at simultaneous stimulation. The dosage, however, is of enormous importance as a too high dosis can cause nausea and vomiting. As the contained lobeline is similar to nicotine with regard to its effect, it's also used in preparations for quitting smoking.

The plant is known as a good remedy against asthmatic suffering and is, moreover, often used as a mere decorative plant.

Annual herb. Start indoors. Seeds need light for germination (don't cover). The seedlings should be transplanted to pots when large enough to handle, and set outdoors after the last expected frosts.
