Description
Giant Radishes with a Mild Bite
'Rote Riesen' is a traditional radish cultivar known for its impressive size: the deep red roots can reach up to 30 cm in length while remaining consistently crisp and tender throughout. The flesh is snow-white, juicy, and offers a pleasantly mild yet aromatic flavour – ideal for salads and eating raw.
Thanks to their size, a single radish is often sufficient for a full serving. Originating in Europe, this robust variety has proven itself over generations and is particularly well suited to outdoor cultivation. It thrives in deep, well-structured soils and benefits from consistent watering. The plants show low susceptibility to pithiness or hollowing and are considered highly reliable in cultivation.
As an open-pollinated variety, 'Rote Riesen' is also well suited to seed saving – perfect for those who value heritage varieties and self-sufficiency in the garden.

Sowing and care
Sowing & Care
Sowing can take place directly outdoors from March to August. The soil should be deep, well loosened, and kept consistently moist. Sow the seeds approximately 1–2 cm deep, spacing them 8–10 cm apart within the row. A row spacing of 20–25 cm allows sufficient room for growth. Radishes prefer a sunny to partially shaded position. Harvesting is possible around six weeks after sowing, depending on the desired size of the roots.
