Tomatillos are physalis plants and closely related to tomatoes. The fruits are hidden in a lampion-like shell that's especially decorative shortly before the fruits are fully ripe. In Mexican cuisine, they are mainly used for salsas (develop their special flavour especially when cooked).

Annual plant. Ideal location: Full sun. Sowing: Like tomatoes. Preculture from March at temperatures around +22-25°C. After germination, place them in a slightly cooler location. Plant into the greenhouse or outdoors in May.
The fruits ripen in lampion-like shells. When they burst and the fruit turns light green, the tomatillos are ripe.
