Description
Rediscovered Beauty of Field Margins
The Common Corncockle (Agrostemma githago) is a once widespread arable wildflower that enchants with its graceful, purplish-violet blooms and silvery-green foliage. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, it spread throughout Central Europe over centuries alongside cereal cultivation – until it almost completely vanished in the 20th century due to modern farming methods and intensive herbicide use.
As a typical cornfield wildflower, the corncockle is now listed on the Red List of Threatened Species. Its formerly problematic toxicity led to targeted eradication, since its seeds were once milled together with grain. Thanks to modern seed-cleaning techniques, this now poses little risk. Today, the corncockle is enjoying a revival in naturalistic gardens and cottage gardens – not only as a delicate summer flower, but also as a valuable nectar source for bees, bumblebees, and hoverflies.
Its dainty flowers with a white centre are particularly charming when combined with poppies, chamomile, or cornflowers. In suitable gardens, it self-seeds readily and creates romantic flowering retreats with nostalgic charm.
Note: All parts of the plant are toxic and should not be consumed.
