Description
Aromatic Flowering Plant of North American Origin
Lemon Beebalm (Monarda citriodora), also known as American Lemon Mint or Lemon Bergamot, is an aromatic and versatile flowering plant native to North America. Its purple to pink whorled flower clusters exude a tangy, fresh citrus scent, making it a highlight in scented gardens, wildflower borders and naturalistic herb gardens.
Traditionally, it has been used as a medicinal and herbal tea plant. An infusion made from its leaves is thought to relieve stomach and bronchial discomfort. In the kitchen, its lemon-scented aromatic leaves can be used both raw and cooked – for example, in salads, meat dishes, herbal tea blends or homemade lemonade. In the United States, the essential oil of Monarda is also valued as a natural insect repellent.
In addition, lemon beebalm is an excellent plant for bees and butterflies, contributing to biodiversity in the garden with its abundant nectar supply. Thanks to its compact, upright growth, it is equally well suited to rock gardens and containers on sunny terraces.
