Description
‘Silvery Rose’ carries the delicate rose tone of summer into winter
Tall Strawflower ‘Silvery Rose’ combines silvery pink flowers with long, strong stems and is one of the most beautiful cut flowers and dried flowers for romantic bouquets.
Its semi-double to double flowers show a fine play of colour in pale pink, white and a soft silvery shimmer. The papery, firm bracts give the flowers their characteristic dried-flower quality even while still on the plant. In a sunny summer bed, ‘Silvery Rose’ creates light, elegant accents of colour and combines beautifully with loosely growing summer flowers.
Tall Strawflower descends from a plant species native to Australia and Papua New Guinea. Botanically, it is now classified as Xerochrysum bracteatum, while the former name Helichrysum bracteatum is still frequently used in horticulture and the seed trade. Strawflowers are among the classic everlastings. They have long been valued because their flowers largely retain their shape and colour when dried, allowing them to be used for bouquets, wreaths and floristic decorations long after summer.
‘Silvery Rose’ grows as an annual and, depending on location and growing conditions, forms long flower stems that are well suited to cutting. Regular harvesting encourages further flower formation. For dried bouquets, the flowers are best cut when they are about half to two thirds open. The bundled stems are then hung upside down in an airy, dry and shaded place so that the soft colours are preserved as well as possible.

Sowing and care
Sowing & care of Tall Strawflower ‘Silvery Rose’
Seeds are started indoors from February to April in trays or small pots with fine seed compost. As strawflowers need light to germinate, the very fine seeds are simply scattered onto the soil, pressed down lightly and not covered, or only covered extremely thinly. At a germination temperature of around 22 to 24 °C and with even, careful moisture, they usually germinate within about one to three weeks. After emergence, the seedlings need a very bright position. As soon as two to four true leaves have formed, they are carefully pricked out.
After the last frosts, the young plants can be planted out from mid-May at a spacing of about 25 to 30 cm in a fully sunny, warm position. Alternatively, direct sowing outdoors is possible from April to June. The soil should be loose and well drained. Strawflowers cope better with temporary drought than with persistent wetness and should therefore be watered only moderately. Waterlogging and heavy over-fertilisation should be avoided.
