Papaver somniferum ssp. setigerum, the poppy of Troy, has the reputation of being a wild ancestor of the opium poppy which is commonly cultivated for food and medicinal applications. This poppy has bristly leaf lobes and is of low and graceful stature, the plants are up to 50 cm high. The seed capsules are oval and only about 1cm high. The flowers resemble opium poppy blossoms.
