The desert thornapple is a rather rarely cultivated representative of the genus Datura. It bears white flowers with violet mark inside the chalices and reaches a height of about one meter. It may originate from Asia or the Sonoran Desert in Mexico, but it can be found in many tropical areas. Like many other daturas, the desert-thorn-apple is cultivated for medical purposes, especially in North Africa. In South America it is in use as a shamanic plant, but is considered to be extremely difficult to dose - its use is reserved for the most experienced shamans because the content of alkaloids can vary drastically, depending on the age of the plant. Depending on the active substance concentration, the intake of even the smallest amounts can be fatal. The plant is toxic in all parts and should not be planted in gardens where toddlers play!
