Thyme surely is one of the most versatile herbs a garden can host - in other words: There are little reasons to withhold the herb garden this plant as it is hardy, tasty and grows on dry and nutrient-poor soil, as long as it gets enough sun.

Especially in the Mediterranean kitchen, thyme is in broad use and gives many foods their characteristic flavour. It is excellent with stews, soups, fish and meat dishes. It is an essential part of the herb bunch Bouquet Garni, which is cooked with soups as it also gives it aroma to the dish when cooked longer and doesn't lose it.

Thyme is also a very old medicinal plant, which is put to use especially in the case of diseases of the respiratory tract. Nearly all commercially available cough syrups contain an amount of thyme as it is mucolytic and anticonvulsant and, at the same time, fights the elicitor of coughing by its antibiotic properties. Its flowers are an excellent honey plant.
