The Mandrake steeped in legend surely is one of the most important European magical plants. In the Middle Ages, charms, which should bring wealth and success to the owner, were made from the roots. Man-shaped roots were especially valuable. Simply
pulling the mandrake out of the earth was considered very dangerous, even fatal. Certain rituals had to be executed to be able to harvest the mandrake without any damage. That's how powerful it was considered back in the days.

Formerly, the mandrake was appreciated because of its pain-relieving characteristics. In Europe, two varieties of mandrakes are native and can be grown from seed. The (Common) Mandrake (Mandroga officinarum) and the Autumn Mandrake (Mandragora autumnalis). The cultivation of this species here, the one blooming in spring (Mandragora officinarum), is a little bit more difficult than the one of the Mandragora autumnalis blooming in autumn.

The plant is very poisonous and shouldn't be planted into gardens where toddlers play!

Main harvest:
The mandrake is an approx. 30cm high, perennial plant with a deep, fleshy root. The seeds of the mandrake need cool temperatures to germinate. In nature, this has the purpose that the seeds only germinate after winter. Therefore, they are sown outdoors either in autumn or in early spring (February).

The necessary cold period can also be simulated in the fridge. Therefore, keep the seeds in the fridge with a little bit of slightly wetted sand (e.g. in a freezer bag) for 4-6 weeks. Subsequently, the seeds can be sown regularly. In mild areas, the mandrake is hardy. Otherwise, hibernate it protected, perhaps.
