Not much is known about the garden in the Middle Ages. Certainly the classical monastery garden was of great importance and influenced the private gardens. They were all more like kitchen gardens with medicinal plants, vegetables and fruit trees as
the main components.

This seed kit contains 7 traditional plants from the medieval kitchen garden:
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperta)
Peppermint is an old, traditional herb-, tea-, and medicinal plant with refreshing aroma.
  • Herb of grace, common rue (Ruta graveolens)
A seasoning and medicinal herb very popular in ancient times, which has almost fallen into oblivion today. Very individual, sweet-wine-like aroma that goes well with fish and game.
  • Lovage (Levisticum officinale)
Lovage grows into an erect shrub of impressive size and has a wonderfully aromatic and strong flavour. It is an old medicinal-, and herbal plant, which is a 'must-have' for any kitchen garden.
  • Swiss Chard 'Glatter Silber' organic (Beta vulgaris)
This variety has broad, silvery white ribs and dark green leaves. The leaves are used like spinach, the broad stems are e.g. steamed a crunchy pleasure.
  • Parsnip 'Tender and True' organic (Pastinaca sativa)
Back in the days, the Romans introduced parsnips to all corners of Europe. This popular root vegetable is very easy to grow and its long, white roots develop a wonderful mild, yet aromatic flavour.
  • Medlar (Mespilus germanica)
Fruit tree cultivated in the Middle Ages with brown, slightly woody fruits. After the first frosts, these can be used for brewing and preserving.
  • Einkorn wheat organic (Triticum monococcum)
Einkorn wheat is a so-called original grain from the ancestral line of wheat. This species is also one of the oldest cultivated plants of mankind.
The seeds of each variety are packaged in a separate sachet.

The seed sachets and detailed growing instructions in German and English are packed in a beautiful gift box - a great, sustainable gift for the garden. Any plant lover will be pleased.
