The Germani pressed an intoxicating wine from the fruits which had presumably been used in drinking rituals. In Siberian shamanism, together with the fly agaric, it plays a large part.

Sowing & cultivation
Low, perennial plant. Loves moist locations and rather sour soils. Sowing: Only cover the seeds with soil gently. Perhaps, cold stratification (early sowing) is necessary.
