The tomato 'Marmande' is an old French beefsteak tomato with delicious juicy, fruity and sweet flavour. Its flat round, slightly corrugated red fruits can already be harvested in June and are among the earliest beefsteak tomatoes, weighing 200-500 g. It is an extremely robust heirloom tomato variety which bears an extraordinary number of fruits even in colder locations. The Marmande tomato grows up to 2,50 m high and requires a trellis, stakes or any kind of stable plant support. The name of this beefsteak tomato goes back to the city Marmande, which is located in the Aquitaine region in the department of Lot-et-Garonne on the eastern bank of the Garonne, and which is today regarded as the tomato capital of southwest France. Around the end of the nineteenth century, local farmers from this region were known for cultivating particularly delicious varieties.
