The Milk Thistle is a very significant old medicinal plant. It contains the active ingredient silymarin that shows excellent results with the treatment of liver affections. Indeed, it scientifically verifiably awakens enormously regenerative powers
and can, for example, prevent severe liver damages in case of symptoms of poisoning through the death cap if the sylmarin is administered early enough. A cure with the seeds of the milk thistle can support the liver regenerate after an abundance of alcohol and too greasy food.

The impressive, beautiful thistle was used in the kitchen in former times. It was also called "wild artichoke" as the flower heads were prepared and eaten similar to artichokes. If you remove the thorns from the leaves, you can steam them like spinach or add them to a wild herb salad raw. The petals are also edible and optically a beautiful highlight in salads. The long taproots also come into question in the kitchen and are prepared like black salsify. All in all, the taste of all parts is rather bitter, which is good for the liver.

Like many thorny plants, the milk thistle belongs to the Christian symbolic plants. This explains the many folksy names like "Saint Mary's Thistle". According to legend, Maria dripped a few drops of milk onto the leaves of the thistle while breastfeeding, which is said to have caused the white leaf spots and gave it the name "milk thistle".
