Because of their edible fruits, bananas are an important crop in many tropical countries. In particular the varieties used for cooking are a staple food for many people. Most commercially sold bananas come exclusively from sterile, seedless varieties. Wild bananas like the sweet fruits of this darjeeling banana contain viable seeds, however, and this hardy cultivar can even be grown in colder climates like in Central Europa, if it is planted in a sheltered place. When the aboveground part freezes in late autumn, it can be cut down to the rhizome and protected by a thick layer of leaves prior to the first frosts. It might not bear fruit by then, though, as the darjeeling banana needs longer than one year to fruition, which is difficult if it freezes off in the fall. In very severe winters and with insufficient cover, even this variety might freeze entirely - it is a tropical plant after all.
