The roundleaf mallow is an annual to biennial shrub domiciled in Europe and Western Asia. It flourishes from June to autumn and pleases the eye with beautiful, tender blossoms in rose-white. The roundleaf mallow is a good honey plant and nutritional source for the painted lady butterfly.

This tender plant, however, has a lot more in store than just being beautiful to look at. It has been long known as a very nutritious wild vegetable and medicinal plant. All parts of the plant can be used in the kitchen.

The fresh leaves can be used raw as a salad or boiled as leaf vegetables. When boiling, the leaves tend to slime. That’s why the leaves of the roundleaf mallow are often used to thicken soups.
The blossoms can beautify the plate as edible decoration.
The unripe seeds have a slightly nutty taste and can be snacked like nuts.
The fruits were used in the kitchen in times of need, as well. They smell and taste of cheese and can be ground into flour.
A stock cooked from the roots serves as protein substitute at long last.

In medicine, especially the leaves are used fresh or dried, as well. Teas which are used against inflammations of the mucous membranes in the inside of the body are often prepared from them.

The roundleaf mallow is very nitrophilous. It prefers sunny, protected locations with fresh, nutritious, porous, humous soils. It is sensitive to drought.
