Common centaury has already been an important medicinal plant since antiquity and is used for diseases of the digestive system. It's applied for stomachaches and gastritis. The name "common centaury" tells that the plant was so important to the people back in the days that they estimated its value at 1000 guilders. Even Hildegard von Bingen and Hippocrates mentioned it. Applied externally, it's said to help with purulent wounds and eczema. Its taste really is very bitter as it's a close relative of gentian, which also has a digestive effect because of its bitters. It's under strict conservation and mustn't be collected wildly!
