Garlic chives are an ancient cultivated plant from China. The strap-shaped leaves with triangular bases are harvested in a similar way to chives and have a savoury-sweet garlic aroma. As a culinary herb it is only suitable when used uncooked but the tender seed capsules are also delicious. In some gardens the vigorous white flowering plant is selected simply for its ornamental qualities.
