Thyme surely is one of the most versatile herbs that a garden can hold - in other words: There are few reasons to withhold this plant from the herb garden as it is hardy, tasty, and grows on dry and nutrient-poor soils as long as it only gets enough
sun.

Especially in Mediterranean cuisine, thyme is in broad use and gives many foods their characteristic flavor. It is excellent with stews, soups, fish, and meat dishes. It's an essential part of the herb bunch Bouquet Garni, which is also cooked as it, after prolonged cooking, releases its flavour to the dish and doesn't lose it.

Thyme is also a very old medicinal plant, which is put to use especially in respiratory tract diseases. Almost all commercially available cough syrups contain a part of thyme as it's expectorant and anticonvulsant and, at the same time, fights the elicitor of the cough by its antibiotic characteristics. Its flowers are an excellent honey plant.
