The French carrot 'Oxheart' (Daucus carota) belongs firmly among the heirloom vegetables. It was registered as a species in France in 1884 and is referred to as the original form of orange carrots.

It is a mid-late carrot cultivar, with bright orange, up to 15 cm long and sometimes up to 10 cm thick roots. The result is a rather broad and short, tapered root body that needs more ground space than most other types of carrots. The aroma is very outstanding with a juicy, sweet taste.

Another special thing about this carrot is its suitability for cultivation in heavier soils. You can grow the oxheart carrot both as a summer and a storage carrot and use it fresh or for juicing. It is als known as Guérande Heirloom Carrot.

Germination duration: Carrots need very long, 21-27 days on average. That's why it's recommended to mix the seeds with either radish seeds or dill seeds. Both germinates clearly faster and marks a row so that the care of the sowing gets easier. By harvesting the radish that is ripe earlier, the rows are pruned automatically. The dill should also be removed when it has reached a height of approx. 25cm.

Soil: Sandy-loamy, deep, loose, and stone-free soil. This variety prospers very well in loamy soils.
Care: Carrots are moderate feeders and don't tolerate fresh dung. Only use ripe compost for fertilizing. Carrots like to be kept moist and often need supplementary irrigation on sandy soils during the hot summer months. Weeding out is crucial while the plant is still young as the tender plantlets are overrun with weeds fast. For good results, the soil should be loosened regularly. Especially after strong rain when it tends to clog.
Harvest: Most often from May to July. There's no clear sign of maturity.
