The Red Valerian is an enormously undemanding, long-flowering plant of the Valerian family from the Mediterranean region that likes to grow on barren, sandy grounds in a sunny location and can be settled easily in stone gardens. It has hardly any demands regarding irrigation and tolerated fresh and dry soils. Only waterlogging is problematic - the red valerian also has the image of only growing really well when neglected. Larger plants bloom bright red to crimson from spring to autumn. But it's more than just a long-living dash of colour in the shrub bed. The red valerian is used like lamb's lettuce when young and makes a good salad. The boiled root is also edible. Furthermore, it's medically active and has a calming effect although it shows a different active agent combination.
