Vernal plants
Vernal plants (from the Latin vernalis = “belonging to spring”) are plants induced to flower by low temperatures – a phenomenon called vernalisation.
Low winter temperatures are the cue that flips an internal switch in these plants, enabling them to produce flowers in spring. Many bulbs and early-flowering perennials – such as tulips, narcissi and primulas – are vernalised plants.
