In Paraguay, South Brazil and North Argentine mate-tea seems to be a national drink. Traditionally the infusion is sipped through a metal straw -the bombilla- from a cuia, (hollowed-out pumpkin). A very refreshing drink which dampens the appetite. Fresh leaves have a stimulating effect if chewed. Seed packet
Growing instructions Mate is an evergreen shrub, native to Brazil. It grows very rapidly in a rich, weel drained soil. The seeds must be stratified (place in layers of moist sand). Sometimes it takes one year before germination starts. Frequently check the stratification boxes too se if germination has begun. Then sow immediately (with the sand) in prepared bed. For making Mate tee: The branch tips bearing young leaves can be cut when young. The leaves should be toasted in an oven until dry.
