The Fava Bean 'Hangdown' belongs to the medium-early varieties. They can be sown very early, as soon as the soil has dried in early spring.
This variety produces many long, hanging pods, each containing 4-5 tender, green beans. They can be frozen or consumed fresh.

Fava Beans is sown outdoors as soon as possible, starting at the end of February, as soon as the soil has thawed. The beans may also be pre-soaked in water for several hours before sowing. Sowing depth: 5-8 cm.
Sow in rows with about 30-40 cm distance and keep 8-10 cm of space between the individual plants. Requires moist soil. When the plants have reached a height of 15-20 cm, they should be kept free from weeds and earthed up. Once the pods have developed, break off stem tips for good growth.
The sooner Fava Beans are sown, the lower is the risk of infestation with the black bean aphid. Intercropping with savory can also reduce infestation.
