The tobacco plant was already ritually used in America in pre-Columbian times. The "plant spirit" of tobacco was regarded as a powerful ally and tobacco smoke was supposed to facilitate the shaman's access to the spiritual world. Smoking was mostly done with pipes or in the form of cigars. Snuff or chewing of chopped tobacco leaves is probabyl even older as a form of consumption.
In the 16th century, sailors brought tobacco with them to Europe, and the culture of smoking spread rapidly throughout the world.

The bluish-green tree tobacco plant is happy to either remain at bush size or to develop further into a tree, with leathery blue frosted leaves and small, yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. Nicotiana glauca does not actually contain nicotine but instead alkaloids, which cause similar effects.

Burley tobacco is a popular cigar tobacco and used for cigarette tobacco blends.
