A close relative of American sweetgrass, which grows better in Europe, this fodder has a very strong scent, reminiscent of a freshly-mown lawn. It is triggered by the ingredient coumarin, which is also responsible for the sweet aroma reminiscent of honey and vanilla that makes sweet vernal grass very suitable as a culinary herb. The roots also carry this scent and can be ground and used as an additive for snuff. Sweet vernal grass grows wild in grazing areas, roadsides, and wastelands. It reproduces via seeds which are distributed by wind or water and can be sown unintentionally as a component of green fodder.
