A touch of prairie and Indian summer in the garden

The Black-eyed Susan 'Sahara' is a modern selection of the North American prairie species Rudbeckia hirta. This species originally comes from the vast grasslands of North America, where it inhabits sunny meadows and open sites. The name "hirta" means "rough" and refers to the slightly hairy leaves and stems that gave the plant its descriptive name.

The variety 'Sahara' delights with an unusually warm interplay of colours: semi-double to fully double, velvety blooms in shades of cappuccino, caramel, copper, golden brown and muted dusky pink. With flowers measuring 7 to 10 cm across and a height of around 50 to 60 cm, it is particularly striking when planted in larger drifts. From high summer well into autumn, it creates a vibrant, shimmering ribbon of colour reminiscent of the so-called Indian summer.

As a typical prairie plant, 'Sahara' is ideal for naturalistic gardens, herbaceous borders and prairie-style plantings. The flowers are eagerly visited by bees and other insects. At the same time, it is an excellent cut flower: its sturdy stems and long vase life make it perfect for summer and autumn bouquets. Botanically, Rudbeckia hirta is considered a short-lived perennial or biennial, but in gardens it is usually grown as an annual and may sustain itself by self-seeding under favourable conditions.

Sowing & Care of the Black-eyed Susan 'Sahara'

Sowing can begin from March indoors or in a greenhouse at around 18 to 20 °C. From April onwards, direct sowing into the bed is also possible. The seeds are only pressed down and not covered with soil, as they require light for germination. With consistent moisture, they germinate after about 2 to 3 weeks. After a further four weeks, prick out the young plants and transplant them into the bed. A planting distance of around 30 cm ensures a dense, ground-covering display of flowers.

'Sahara' prefers a sunny position with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It is heat tolerant, but should be watered regularly during prolonged dry periods without causing waterlogging. Removing faded flowers extends the flowering period well into autumn.
