Soft lemon cream flowers, edible and insect-friendly - an elegant pot marigold with a long flowering period

The pale yellow pot marigold 'Lemon Cream' is a particularly elegant form of the classic garden calendula. Its semi-double to fully double flowers appear in a gentle lemon cream shade that looks calmer and more harmonious in borders than the typical bright orange pot marigolds. With its bushy growth the plant reaches about 40 to 60 cm in height and continuously produces new flowers from early summer until autumn.

Pot marigolds are among the oldest garden and medicinal plants in Europe. As early as the Middle Ages, calendula flowers were cultivated in monastery gardens and used in ointments, tinctures and herbal teas. The flowers contain flavonoids and other plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties. Even today calendula remains one of the most important medicinal plants for skin care and natural cosmetics.

The flowers are also versatile in the kitchen. The edible petals add decorative colour to salads, herb butter or desserts and were traditionally even used as “poor man's saffron” to give dishes a warm yellow tone.

In addition, pot marigold is a highly valuable plant for insects. Its pollen- and nectar-rich flowers are readily visited by bees, bumblebees and hoverflies. In vegetable gardens calendula is often grown as a companion plant because it attracts beneficial insects and supports soil life.

The variety 'Lemon Cream' also belongs to the group known as cool flowers. This term describes annual flowers that can be sown at relatively cool temperatures and tolerate light frost. As a result they can establish early in the year and begin flowering particularly early.

Sowing & Care of Pot Marigold 'Lemon Cream'

Pot marigolds are extremely easy to grow from seed. Direct sowing is usually carried out from April to June directly in the garden bed. Alternatively, seeds can be started indoors about six to eight weeks before the last frost, which allows the plants to flower earlier. The seeds are placed about 0.5 to 1 cm deep in loose soil and kept evenly moist.

At temperatures around 15 to 20 °C the seeds usually germinate within about 5 to 14 days. After emergence, the young plants are thinned to a spacing of about 20 to 30 cm. Pot marigolds prefer sunny positions and grow well in almost any well-drained garden soil.

For a particularly long flowering period it is advisable to regularly remove faded flowers. This encourages the plant to produce new buds continuously and it can flower until the first frost. If some flowers are allowed to mature, pot marigold easily self-seeds and often reappears in the garden the following year.
