White pincushion flowers for summer gardens and bouquets

White Sweet Scabious 'Double White' is a particularly elegant variety of Scabiosa atropurpurea. Its long, slender stems carry densely double, pure white flower heads whose cushion-like shape gives scabious its unmistakable appearance. The plants reach around 70 to 90 cm in height and flower for many weeks from summer well into autumn.

With its long stems, 'Double White' is an excellent cut flower. The white blooms combine beautifully with both colourful summer flowers and more restrained grasses and herbs, bringing the plant’s light, almost floating effect to bouquets as well. Regular cutting and removing faded flowers encourages the plants to keep producing new buds.

An old garden flower from the Mediterranean region

Sweet Scabious originally comes from the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated in European gardens for centuries. Its striking flowers and suitability as a cut flower made it a valued ornamental plant from an early stage. Even the botanical genus name Scabiosa tells part of its cultural history: it is associated with the Latin word scabies for skin complaints and recalls that various scabious species were once also used in traditional herbal medicine.

Today, Scabiosa atropurpurea is valued above all for its ornamental qualities. 'Double White' is wonderfully suited to cottage gardens, summer flower beds and cut-flower gardens. The flowers are also readily visited by bees, bumblebees, hoverflies and butterflies. A sunny position and loose, well-drained soil provide ideal conditions for this annual summer flower.

Sowing and care of White Sweet Scabious 'Double White'

Pre-cultivation can take place indoors or in a greenhouse from February to April. Place the seeds on moist, loose seed compost, press them down lightly and cover them only very thinly with soil, as scabious seeds need light to germinate. At around 15 to 20 °C, the seeds usually germinate within about 10 to 21 days. Until germination, the substrate should be kept evenly moist but not wet.

As soon as the young plants are strong enough, prick them out individually and continue growing them in a bright position. After the last stronger frosts, they can be planted outdoors from around mid-May at a spacing of about 30 to 40 cm. Alternatively, direct sowing in the final position is possible from April to June. Here too, press the seeds down only lightly or cover them with a very thin layer of soil and do not allow the seedbed to dry out during germination.

'Double White' prefers a sunny position with loose, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. Once established, the plants cope quite well with temporary dry periods. Regularly removing faded flowers extends the flowering period into autumn. In windy locations, it can be useful to give the long flower stems some light support.
