Heirloom black corn variety. The Black Aztec traces back to the 1800's. In the semi-ripe, the sweet black corn ears can be used as sweetcorn, later as grain maize. For many South American tribes maize was sacred as foodstuff and for fermenting their corn beer (pulque). In Indian creation myths, it is often said that man was created from corn. Over the centuries, a tremendous variety of different maize cultivars has originated.

Maize can be precultivated indoors which considerably increases the yield. Otherwise simply sow from mid-April directly outdoors. The seeds should be planted about 2-3 cm deep and the distance between the individual corn stalks should be around 45 cm. When sown in "blocks", plants thrive better than in single unprotected rows.

Hint: why not try intercropping with beans, according to Indian tradition? The corn serves as a climbing aid for stalk beans and these in turn accumulate nitrogen in the soil. In order to harvest your own seed, select the earliest and most beautiful cobs and harvest these as late as possible. Also keep in mind that the wind carries maize pollen for almost a mile, so if you live close to a corn field, there's a real danger that your Black Aztec maize hybridizes with genetically modified maize.

Nicht gut
Habe 25 Samen gepflanzt, nur 2 sind gekeimt, und sind haben, nach einem Jahr keine Früchte bekommen. Ich vermute dass die Samen alt waren.

Eine normale Bewässerung (2 mal wöchentlich) war gerade genug. Mit einer Bewässerung in der Woche war es nicht genug. Die Pflanzen ist also nicht resistent gegen Trockenheit.

Gut gekeimt
Fast alle Samen sind gekeimt und zu kräftigen Pflänzchen geworden allerdings wurden ein paar vertrocknete Samen mitgeliefert.
Insgesamt bin ich aber sehr zufrieden.
