Fire, flowers, herbal incense – celebrate the magic of midsummer
The longest day and shortest night mark the start of one of the most magical times in the year – the summer solstice, also known as midsummer. On Midsummer Eve nature shines in all its glory – full of life, light and a deep connection between heaven and earth.
Our ancestors also celebrated this transition, connecting themselves with the forces of nature through fires, dancing and rituals. And today you, too, can tap into this special energy in your garden or on your balcony – with old customs, mindful rituals and powerful plants that are now at their most effective.
Sun fire, living energy
In many parts of Europe fires are lit at the summer solstice and people jump over them in order to leave difficulties behind and receive new energy. The light of the sun, now at its most powerful, is thought to bring good fortune, fertility and protection.
Dancing around the fire, singing old songs, running barefoot through dewy grass – these are all ancient acts people undertook to feel part of a larger whole. Water, too, especially the water of springs and streams, was regarded as having healing powers on this night.
The language of plants
On Midsummer Eve plants are full of energy – their healing power, their fragrance, their colour: everything seems more intense, more full of life. In old times many of these plants were gathered precisely at this time.
Here are some of the magical solstice herbs you can find in our range in seed form:
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)
The mother of all incense herbs. Its silver-green leaves protect and cleanse – a true companion in any midsummer night. Dried and tied together in a bundle it is burned as incense over the fire or in a garden building.
St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)
At midsummer St. John’s wort shines like liquid sunlight. It is known as the plant of light, which strengthens the soul and drives out dark thoughts. In earlier times it was hung over doors – as protection against evil spirits.
Marigold (Calendula officinalis)
Its glowing orange flowers are now casting their spell in every garden, symbolising healing and feminine energy. Woven into floral wreaths or used as a tincture, it carries summer’s essence within it.
Vervain (Verbena officinalis)
A mystical herb of the celts and druids. Vervain brings clarity and focus – perfect for rituals around fulfilling wishes or preparing for a new life phase.
Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis)
When the sun sets the evening primrose opens its flowers like a silent miracle. It represents transitions, intuition and faith in the unknown.
