Aromatic oriental tobacco from Turkey with a fine leaf structure

‘Baffra Basma’ tobacco is a traditional variety from the Turkish region of Bafra on the Black Sea and belongs to the group known as Basma tobaccos. These oriental tobaccos have been valued for centuries for their pronounced aroma, low nicotine content and fine leaf structure. ‘Baffra Basma’ is traditionally sun-cured and is considered a mild, aromatic variety, mainly used as a flavour component in tobacco blends.

The plants grow compact to bushy and reach a height of around 100 to 200 cm, depending on the site. Characteristic features are the many small, oval leaves with fine veining, which take on a light yellow to orange hue after curing. The natural sugar content ensures a mild, slow-burning smoke and a complex aroma with sweet-spicy, earthy and slightly resinous notes.

Due to its low nicotine content, ‘Baffra Basma’ is particularly well suited as an aromatic component in blends, for example in combination with Virginia tobaccos. In addition, the variety is appreciated for its decorative value: the pink flowers and compact growth make it an attractive plant for garden beds. A traditional tobacco variety with a long history that thrives reliably on poor soils - from gardeners for gardeners.

Sowing & Care of ‘Baffra Basma’ tobacco

Sowing is carried out as an early indoor cultivation from March to April. Tobacco seeds require light for germination and are therefore only scattered thinly on the surface of the substrate and gently pressed down. Germination takes place at temperatures between 20 and 25 °C within around 7 to 14 days. Once several true leaves have developed, the young plants can be carefully pricked out.

Planting out into the open ground takes place after the last frosts, once there is no longer any risk of late frost. The site should be sunny, warm and rather dry. ‘Baffra Basma’ prefers poor, sandy to loamy soils and requires only moderate nutrient input. Waterlogging must be avoided at all costs. Harvesting begins from July, with the ripening leaves being picked gradually from bottom to top and then sun-dried or air-dried.
