The fruits of the prickly pear variety Opuntia are called prickly pears and are a well-known delicacy in many southern countries. The pulp itself ("Nopalitos" = Cactus ears) is prepared as a vegetable in Mexico. All prickly pears have relatively few prickles and, with strong sunshine, can get very large in a dry climate.

The seeds are scattered onto moist cactus soil and pressed onto it lightly. Cover them with glass (mini-greenhouse) so that moisture remains. Germinates at approx. 23°C after 2-6 weeks. Opuntia germinates best after a longer storage period. Avoid waterlogging in the first weeks.
