A close relative of American sweet grass, which grows better in Europe, this fodder has a very strong scent, reminiscent of a freshly-mown lawn. It is triggered by the ingredient coumarin, which is also responsible for the sweet aroma reminiscent of honey and vanilla that makes sweet vernal grass very suitable as a culinary herb. The roots also carry this scent and can be ground and used as an additive for snuff. Sweet vernal grass grows wild in grazing areas, roadsides and wastelands.
