‘Purple Red’ brings deep purple tones to summer beds and dried bouquets

Tall Strawflower ‘Purple Red’ combines rich purple-red to burgundy flowers with long, strong stems and is excellent as a cut flower and dried flower.

Its flowers appear less bright than many vivid red summer flowers and instead show a calm, deep colour effect between dark pink-red, red-violet and burgundy. The firm, papery bracts surround the actual small flower head and retain their shape and colour particularly well when dried. As a result, ‘Purple Red’ brings structure and depth of colour to natural bouquets, wreaths and floristic arrangements.

The species Xerochrysum bracteatum originally comes from Australia and has been bred over many generations for flower colour, durability and cutting quality. In horticulture, the older botanical name Helichrysum bracteatum is still widely used. Strawflowers were already among the popular everlastings in the 19th century, meaning flowers that remain decorative long after cutting.

‘Purple Red’ grows upright and forms robust stems that are well suited to cutting. In the bed, this variety creates a warm, structuring colour accent and combines especially beautifully with pale strawflowers, grasses and loosely growing summer flowers. For dried bouquets, the flowers are best cut shortly before they are fully open and then hung upside down in an airy, dry and shaded place.

Sowing & care of Tall Strawflower ‘Purple Red’

Seeds can be started indoors from March in trays or small pots with fine seed compost. As strawflowers need light to germinate, the fine seeds are only pressed down lightly or covered with soil at most very thinly. For germination, they need warmth, even moisture and then plenty of light. After emergence, the young plants should be grown on in a bright, airy and slightly cooler position so that they grow compactly.

After the last frosts, they can be planted outdoors from mid-May. Alternatively, direct sowing is possible from April. The position should be fully sunny, warm and well drained. Loose, well-drained and moderately nutrient-rich soil is ideal. The plants tolerate temporary drought better than waterlogging and should therefore be watered only moderately. Regular removal of faded heads encourages a long flowering period into autumn.
