Sagittaria is originally a Central European wild plant that grows in moist locations. Most often, it's planted as leaf ornamental and decorative plants in ponds and forms small whitish blossoms. What's less known is its history as a crop plant - its rhizomes are edible and very tasty.

Today, arrowheads are mainly cultivated in China for their small tubers (approx. 3 cm). The tubers are prepared like a vegetable or alternatively dried and ground as flour to thicken sauces or for making sweet dishes. In Canada, arrowheads are called "Wapatoo" and natives collected them and roasted them in the embers.

Arrowheads are marsh plants and can be kept in waterproof pots. However, as they tolerate water-level fluctuations well, they also grow in "normal" soil in the garden when they're well-irrigated. It's best to sow them in nutritious mud and keep them warm. Love lots of sun.
