La cariofillata comune ha lo stesso aroma dei chiodi di garofano e può, quindi, essere utilizzata allo stesso modo. Quando le spezie esotiche non erano ancora accessibili a tutti, il suo rizoma serviva proprio come sostituto dei chiodi di garofano. Le foglie di questa pianta sempreverde sono un ottimo ingrediente per le insalate invernali, mentre la radice è utilizzata principalmente come medicinale. La radice di questa pianta è nota anche per il suo effetto afrodisiaco.

Veniva utilizzata anche come spezia per birra e liquori e gli oli essenziali in essa contenuti, soprattutto l'eugenolo, sono componenti importanti dell'olio di chiodi di garofano commercializzato. Per via del suo aroma caratteristico, è anche una popolare pianta da incenso.

Aussaat und Pflege von Geum urbanum

Die Nelkenwurz ist eine ausdauernde Pflanze, die sich besonders gut in sonnigen bis halbschattigen Gartenbereichen etabliert. Ein nährstoffreicher, frischer Boden fördert ihr Wachstum. Für die Aussaat empfiehlt sich folgendes Vorgehen:

Vorkultur: ab Frühjahr bei ca. 20 °C.
Saattiefe: mit der 1–2-fachen Samenstärke mit Erde bedecken.
In den ersten Wochen gleichmäßig feucht halten, jedoch Staunässe vermeiden.
Kältestratifikation: eine mehrwöchige Kühlphase kann die Keimung fördern.
Pflanzabstand: etwa 30 cm.
