An Indian Treasure with Intense Sweetness & Mystical Appearance

The historic melon variety ‘Kajari’ originates from the Punjab region of India and is a particularly decorative and aromatic honeydew melon (Cucumis melo). The fruits weigh between 800 g and 1 kg, and their smooth skin displays alternating emerald green and deep orange stripes. The flesh is buttery-soft, greenish-pink, and exceptionally sweet, with an intense, nectar-like fragrance – reminiscent of honeydew melons, but even more aromatic.

‘Kajari’ matures very early in just 70–80 days, making it suitable even for cooler regions of Central Europe. Each plant can yield around 8 to 10 fruits. The variety was rediscovered by botanical explorers such as Joseph Simcox and has since proven to be easy to cultivate, drought-tolerant, and resistant to disease.

Sowing and Care of the 'Kajari' Melon

Sow seeds indoors from April or directly outdoors from mid-May, once the soil temperature remains consistently above 15 °C. Seeds germinate at 20 to 25 °C within 7 to 14 days. A warm, sunny and sheltered location is ideal. ‘Kajari’ prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil and should be planted at intervals of approximately one metre. It can also be grown successfully in large containers. During fruit development, regular watering is essential – mulching helps to retain soil moisture. A light application of fertiliser during the growth phase will encourage good fruit set. The first melons can be harvested around 70 to 80 days after sowing. Ripe fruits usually detach easily from the stem and release their characteristic honey-like fragrance.
