Il 'Gelbe Badische Landmais', come è stata ufficialmente chiamata questa varietà, è un'antica varietà tedesca di mais ad impollinazione aperta della regione del Reno. Venne creata all'inizio del XX secolo presso la stazione di selezione delle sementi di Hochburg, vicino a Emmendingen, e fu subito un successo rivoluzionario per l'epoca, in quanto produceva una resa significativamente più elevata e si dimostrò estremamente robusta.

Il Badische Landmais non è riuscito a reggere la concorrenza delle varietà di mais ibride provenienti dagli Stati Uniti che successivamente invasero il mercato, che possono produrre fino al 50% in più. Ciononostante, questa varietà di mais continua a essere coltivata perché rappresenta un'importante risorsa genetica. Grazie alla sua robustezza e stabilità, è ancora molto adatto come foraggio selvatico, anche se non svolge più alcun ruolo nell'agricoltura moderna.

Per l'utilizzo domestico nel proprio giardino, questa varietà di mais è ancora altamente raccomandata.

Maize can be precultivated indoors which considerably increases the yield. Otherwise, simply sow from mid-April directly outdoors. The seeds should be planted about 2-3 cm deep and the distance between the individual corn stalks should be around 45 cm. When sown in 'blocks', plants thrive better than in single unprotected rows. Hint: why not try intercropping with beans, according to Indian tradition? The corn serves as a climbing aid for stalk beans and these, in turn, accumulate nitrogen in the soil.
