Red and yellow spurred flowers for semi-shaded borders and natural garden settings

Red Columbine is a North American wild perennial with striking red and yellow flowers. Its long, backward-curving spurs and elegantly nodding blooms give it a delicate, almost floating appearance. In its native habitat, Aquilegia canadensis grows along woodland edges, in open woodland and on rocky slopes - conditions it also prefers in the garden.

With a height of usually 40 to 60 cm, it remains compact and is ideal for semi-shaded herbaceous borders, woodland margins and naturalistic plantings. Flowering time is in late spring to early summer, usually from May to June. The two-coloured flowers are highly attractive to insects and are frequently visited by bees, bumblebees and butterflies. In North America it is regarded as a classic hummingbird plant - a sign of its rich nectar production.

This perennial is individually rather short-lived, but reliably maintains itself through self-seeding and gradually forms loose, site-faithful groups. It creates a lasting and natural effect, especially in woodland gardens and shaded natural borders. With a history: in various Indigenous cultures of North America, the seeds were used in ritual contexts. The botanical name Aquilegia refers to the flower spurs, which resemble eagle claws.

Sowing & Care of Red Columbine

Red Columbine requires a period of cold stratification for reliable germination. A cold treatment of 3 to 4 weeks at 2 to 5 °C is recommended, for example in the refrigerator in slightly moist sand or substrate. Alternatively, sowing can be carried out outdoors in autumn, allowing natural winter temperatures to provide the necessary stratification.

After the cold period, the seeds should only be lightly covered with soil or gently pressed onto the surface, as they require light for germination. At temperatures of 15 to 20 °C, germination usually takes place within 3 to 6 weeks. The substrate should be kept evenly moist but not wet.

An early start indoors is possible from February to March after stratification. Direct sowing in the border is ideally carried out in autumn. Red Columbine prefers semi-shaded to lightly shaded locations with humus-rich, well-drained and evenly moist soil. Waterlogging should be avoided.
