Snapdragon - colourful summer flower with distinctive blooms

Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) are robust, richly coloured summer flowers with unmistakable blooms that open when gently pressed - hence their well-known name. They add height, colour and structure to beds, containers and borders and are among the most versatile annual flowering plants for gardens and balconies.

Snapdragons prefer sunny to partially shaded locations and a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. They grow upright, branch well and can be cultivated both in beds and in larger pots. They are particularly effective in group plantings or as structural companions among perennials and summer flowers.

The range of varieties extends from soft pastel shades to strong yellow, red, orange and violet tones. Depending on the variety, snapdragons reach heights of around 30 to 90 cm. Many varieties are excellent cut flowers and last several days in a vase.

Snapdragons are considered classic summer flowers, but under favourable conditions they can persist through self-seeding. In mild winters they can survive temperatures down to around -10 °C and reappear the following year.

This plant is suitable for anyone who appreciates long-lasting summer blooms with clear form and strong colour impact.
