In recent years, a true competition has erupted to produce the world's hottest chilli variety. For a long time, the ‘Bhut Jolokia’ (also known as Naga Bhut Jolokia) was considered the benchmark for extreme heat, reaching around one million Scovilles.

Since then, it has been surpassed by further cultivars. Varieties such as ‘Trinidad Moruga Scorpion’ and later the ‘Carolina Reaper’ have set new standards, achieving significantly higher Scoville Heat Units. This development demonstrates how intensively the breeding of extra hot chillies has progressed over recent decades.

Extra hot chilli seeds often originate from the species Capsicum chinense. The plants require patience, warmth, and light, but can be successfully grown in temperate climates – such as in a greenhouse, in pots, or in sheltered locations. In the kitchen, extra hot chillies should be used with caution. Even small amounts are sufficient to intensely season dishes. Alongside the heat, fruity or smoky aromas often play an important role.
