Die Gewöhnliche Eselsdistel (Onopordum acanthium), oft auch einfach als Eselsdistel bekannt, ist eine stattliche, bienenfreundliche Distelart aus der Familie der Korbblütler (Asteraceae). Mit ihrer beeindruckenden Höhe von bis zu zwei Metern und den charakteristischen, großflächigen, silbrig-grünen Blättern, die mit einem dichten Filz aus feinen Härchen bedeckt sind, ist sie eine majestätische Erscheinung in jedem Naturgarten. Von Juli bis September trägt sie kugelförmige, violette Blütenköpfe, die nicht nur ein Blickfang sind, sondern auch zahlreiche Insekten anlocken.

Während die Stacheln der Eselsdistel abschreckend wirken mögen, sind die jungen Blätter, Stängel und Wurzeln der Pflanze essbar, wenn sie sorgfältig zubereitet werden. Historisch wurden sie in verschiedenen Kulturen als Gemüse oder in Salaten verwendet. Die Wurzeln wurden sogar als Kaffeeersatz oder in der Volksmedizin genutzt.

Diese Distelart bevorzugt sonnige Standorte und kommt mit trockenen, nährstoffarmen Böden gut zurecht. Sie ist äußerst anspruchslos und kann sich durch Selbstsaat leicht ausbreiten, weshalb ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit nötig ist, um ihre Ausbreitung im Garten zu kontrollieren.

Cold germination: sow outdoors at the beginning of spring or in autumn. Alternatively you can use artificial stratification, as follows. Mix the seeds with moist sand in a plastic bag. Keep the bag warm and moist (approx. +20°C) for the first 2-4 weeks and then place it in the refrigerator and keep it at a temperature of +5°C for 5-6 weeks. Then remove the plastic bag from the refrigerator and remove the seed and sand mix from the bag. Keep the sand mix at room temperature and check the seeds regularly to see when they germinate. Prick the seedlings into pots and plant them out after the last frosts in mid-May.

Info fehlerhaft
die Aussage mit dem Kaltkeimer bei Onopodium im ganzen Netz verbreitet stimmt nicht. Meine selbstgeernteten Samen keimten in einem Glas mit feuchtem Sand bei Zimmertemperatur völlig gleichmäßig nach schon 3 Tagen, konnte sie schon pikieren, Maik Bieber-K.
