Essential oils play a vital role in natural healing and cosmetics. They are produced by steam-distilling parts of plants. Hydrolates, the by-products of steam-distilling plants rich in essential oils, are also very valuable. Of course distillation isn’t something you can simply do just like that at home – but many of the plants that are used in this way also make wonderful scented plants for your garden, so they are definitely worth growing.

A key application area for most of these plants is aromatherapy, i.e. the warming and vaporisation of essential oils. This can be done using a fragrance lamp or by direct inhalation, perhaps using an electric diffuser or vaporiser. External application via massage or as a bath supplement is another option.
