Banana seeds - the wild side of the banana

We know the banana mainly as the yellow, seedless fruit from the supermarket. Yet its wild relatives tell a very different story. Many original Musa species form real seeds, some of them surprisingly large and hard, revealing just how diverse the genus actually is. Bananas are not trees

Even though people often speak of a banana tree, botanically bananas are among the largest herbaceous plants in the world. Their apparent trunk is not made of wood, but of tightly overlapping leaf sheaths that form what is known as a pseudostem. New shoots repeatedly emerge from an underground rhizome.

The genus Musa includes numerous species from tropical and subtropical regions. Alongside familiar edible bananas, there are wild bananas, ornamental bananas and species traditionally cultivated mainly for their fibres. Growth, flowers, fruits and seeds can therefore look correspondingly different.

Why do supermarket bananas have no seeds?

Most bananas we buy as fruit belong to cultivated forms that do not produce fully developed, viable seeds. Many well-known dessert bananas are sterile or largely sterile hybrids whose fruits develop without regular seed formation.

The small dark dots in the flesh are therefore not usable banana seeds, but merely reduced seed structures. In commercial cultivation, such bananas are mostly propagated vegetatively through side shoots of the rhizome or by tissue culture.

Wild bananas bear real seeds

The situation is different with many wild species. Their fruits contain firm, viable seeds that can become surprisingly large depending on the species. For propagation from seed, such seed-forming Musa species are therefore particularly interesting.

Many of today’s cultivated bananas also originally go back to wild species. Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana are especially important, as their genetic material has been combined in numerous dessert and cooking bananas. The seed-forming wild forms therefore preserve an important part of the banana’s genetic diversity.

More than just a yellow fruit

The diversity of the genus Musa reaches far beyond our idea of the classic dessert banana. Some species are cultivated as ornamental plants because of their unusual flowers or coloured fruits. Others provide valuable plant fibres, while still others come from cooler highland regions and are surprisingly robust.

For example, Musa textilis, the abacá or Manila hemp banana, is traditionally used as a fibre plant. Species such as Musa velutina or Musa ornata, by contrast, stand out for their decorative flowers and fruits. Musa sikkimensis and other bananas from higher elevations show, in turn, that not every banana is used exclusively to tropical heat.

A cultivated plant with many faces

Bananas are among the most important cultivated plants in many tropical regions. Depending on the species and tradition, not only the fruits are used: leaves serve for wrapping and cooking food, flowers are prepared as vegetables and fibres can be obtained from the pseudostems of various species.

Banana seeds thus open up a view of the enormous botanical and cultural diversity behind a plant that seems surprisingly familiar in everyday life. From a single well-known fruit, a whole world of different Musa species suddenly emerges.
